LIVING IN POLLENÇA

Pollença

If you buy a property in Pollença you will find an international atmosphere. Living in the town of Pollença offers you innumerable houses, apartments and villas, while in the extensive surroundings we find a paradise of rustic fincas. Pollensa, with its narrow, picturesque streets and close access to Cala San Vicenç and Puerto Pollença, offers a high cultural offer throughout the year and attracts those seeking a quieter life in the north of Mallorca.

The old town of Pollensa

The old town with its narrow winding streets is best explored on foot.

Pollença was founded by residents of the ancient Roman city "Ciutat Romana de Pollentia" - the current Alcúdia. At that time, the location a little further inland, in the northern Tramuntana mountains, offered much more security than the immediate vicinity of the sea, so one could better protect oneself from attacks by vandals and pirates.

On Sunday there is a weekly market in Pollença with many colorful stalls that enliven the Plaça Major, the surrounding streets and the Ca Les Munnares square. Here you can find not only fruits, vegetables, olives, ham, cheese, etc. but also clothing, jewelry, souvenirs and much more. At the edge of the square you will find the church of Nostra Senyora dels Angels from the 13th century and a little further on the Cloister of Santo Domingo with a museum that provides interesting information about the history of Pollença. Numerous cultural events and classical music concerts also take place in the cloister with its historical atmosphere. Every year, in the summer months of July and August, the world-renowned music festival is held outdoors in the cloister of Santo Domingo, always attended by leading international musicians.

The well-known Calvario is a must, climbing the 365 steps to the top of Calvario is a worthwhile effort, because once at the top, you can enjoy wonderful views of the town, the bay of Puerto Pollensa, Alcudia and the Sierra de Tramuntana. There is also a small baroque church, which was built at the end of the 18th century and can be visited.

The emblem of Pollença is the rooster, which also adorns the city's coat of arms. Located in Plaça de l'Amoina, in the Font de Gall fountain, there is a sublime figure of a rooster from 1827. At first glance, this square It seems unspectacular, but it is of great importance for the residents, because the battle of the Moors and Christians is celebrated.

A little adventure that the residents carry out is the walk to the Puig de Maria, the local mountain of Pollensa, on which stands a hermitage and a monastery from the 14th century.

The good thing about this small mountain is that the start of the route is near the center of the town. Very popular among the inhabitants of Pollencça. The ascent lasts approximately one hour and the journey is through ancient forests. Once upstairs, you will find a small and simple cafe with delicious dishes such as paella, rice soups, the typical pa amb oli.

Pollensa has three schools such as the Joan Mas school, Miquel Costa i Llobera, Montisión and the Guillem Cifre de Colonya institute, a golf course and the sports center.

Throughout the year you can enjoy several cultural festivals such as the San Antonio pine festival in January, the battle of the Moors and Christians in August and the Pollença fair in November.

Puerto de Pollença

The Port of Pollença, is located about 7 kilometers from the old town. It is worth taking a walk along the long and beautiful promenade where we will find a wide variety of cafes and restaurants, etc.

The bay offers several kilometers of fine sand beaches for bathing, which are protected from the wind due to their location on the coast of the Formentor peninsula and allow sunbathing even on stormy days. From here you can also enjoy a wonderful view of the foothills of the Tramuntana mountains.

Unlike Pollença, in Puerto Pollença we can enjoy the well-known weekly market with a wide variety of stalls such as clothes, vegetables and souvenirs.

The month of July celebrates the festivities of the Virgen del Carmen, who is the patron saint of sailors, where a boat tour of the Bay of Pollença takes place, as well as different religious and cultural acts. and summer festivals with concerts and popular dances that make wonderful parties.

In Puerto de Pollença we find the ornithological center of La Gola.

La Gola is a small humid area of reduced dimensions, but of great ornithological value thanks to the enormous number of migratory birds that visit it during the spring and autumn months, as well as the species that breed in the area.
