LIFE IN POLLENÇA

Pollença

When you buy a property in Pollensa you will find an international ambience. The historic city offers countless original townhouses and villas, while the extensive emerald green area consists of a paradise of fincas. Pollensa, with its narrow, quaint streets, the adventurous torrent on the outskirts and close access to the beach in Cala San Vicente and Puerto Pollensa, with a high cultural and year-round offer, attracts those who are looking for a quieter life in nature.

In Pollensa you should definitely go up the 365 steps to the top of the Calvary. Each level symbolizes a day of the year. Some people think about their last year as they climb the stairs and make plans for the next 365 days. It is definitely the effort, because when you reach the top you can enjoy a view of the bay of Puerto Pollensa and Alcudia and the Tramuntana mountains. On the Kalvarienberg there is also a small baroque pilgrimage chapel, which was built at the end of the 18th century and can be visited.

The old town of Pollença

The old town with its narrow, winding streets is best explored on foot. Many imposing old houses show that the residents of earlier epochs did not have to suffer from poverty.

Pollensa (in Mallorquin "Pollença") was founded by residents of the former Roman city "Ciutat Romana de Pollentia" - today's Alcúdia. At that time, the location a little further in the interior of the northern Sierra de Tramuntana offered much more security than the immediate vicinity of the sea, so that one could better protect oneself from attacks by vandals and pirates.

On Sunday there is a weekly market in Pollença where the many colorful market stalls enliven the Plaça Major, the streets around and the Ca Les Munnares square. In addition to fruit, vegetables, olives, ham, cheese, etc., you will also find clothes, jewelry, souvenirs and much more. On the edge of the square you will find the church Nostra Senyora dels Angels from the 13th century and a little further the monastery Convent de Sant Domènec with a museum that provides interesting information about the history of the city. In addition, numerous cultural events and classical concerts take place in the monastery with its historical atmosphere. In the summer months of July and August, the world-famous music festival is held in the open air in the cloister of the monastery, to which outstanding musicians always come to Pollença.

The symbol of Pollença is the rooster, which also adorns the city's coat of arms. At the Plaça de l`Amoina, on the Fond de Gall fountain, there is a raised cock figure from 1827. At first glance, this place looks quite unspectacular, but it is of great importance for the residents, because the battle against the pirates was won here who attacked Pollença in 1550. At that time, the residents formed a vigilante group to be prepared against pirate attacks. The cohesion of the island's population has always been very strong - in the past as well as today.

A little adventure that the local residents regularly undertake is the hike to the Puig de Maria, Pollensa's local mountain, on which there is a chapel and a monastery from the 14th century.

The nice thing about this little mountain is that the start of the tour is close to the city center. Very popular with the pollenciner who consider it a challenging excursion on their doorstep. The ascent takes about an hour and winds through ancient forests. Once at the top, you will find a simple, small café with delicious dishes such as paella, rice soups, the typical pa amb oli (bread with oil, topped with ham, cheese, etc.).

Pollensa has a delightful 9-hole golf course. The fairways are protected by trees, but offer spectacular views down to the sea and up to the mountains.

A very popular motif on postcards and vacation photos is the Roman bridge just outside the city. The stone bridge is probably of Roman origin - there are several theories about this - and can be crossed on foot.

Pollença

Port de Pollença

Port de Pollença, the city's port, is about 6 kilometers from the old town. A stroll along the pretty promenade is worthwhile, as is a visit to the cafeterias, restaurants, etc. In contrast to other major tourist centers on Mallorca, the coast here has fortunately not been completely built up by multi-storey hotel castles. If you want to spend a leisurely day at the beach without any hustle and bustle, Port de Pollença is the place for you.

The bay offers several kilometers of fine sandy beaches, which are sheltered from the wind thanks to their location on the Formentor peninsula and allow sunbathing even on stormy days. From here you can also enjoy a wonderful view of the foothills of the Tramuntana Mountains.

Cala San Vicente

Far away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist strongholds is Cala San Vicente. The small village belongs to the municipality of Pollença and is located on the rocky north coast of Mallorca. It is very quiet and relaxing here, with a comparatively poor tourist infrastructure. You won't find any large hotel complexes in Cala San Vicente, the place is characterized by small hotels, holiday homes and apartments. In a remote location, in the midst of a picturesque setting, you can live your life in a relaxed manner. The old fishing village has four beaches to offer its international, but mainly British, guests: Cala Barques, Cala Clara, Cala Molins and Cala Carbo.

The history of the municipality of Pollença begins 3,000 years ago. At that time, the people of early history who are now called talaiotes in the Balearic Islands, settled here. The ancient Romans also appreciated the region's delightful natural landscape. The old Roman bridge el Pont Romá outside Pollença at the Torrent de Sant Jordi comes from her hand. It served the inventive conquerors as part of their water supply system.

In the centuries that followed, the village experienced an eventful time. The vandals had completely destroyed the settlements and displaced the inhabitants inland. Finally, in the 13th century, King Jaume I's soldiers brought Catalan culture to the far north of the island. With their Christian buildings, they had a decisive influence on today's cityscape of Pollença.

In Cala San Vicente there are three beaches available to guests that are ideal for swimming. All three are characterized by fine white sand and extremely clear water. The sunbathing area offers a beautiful panorama of the Formentor peninsula and the Cavall Bernat mountain. Cala Molins is ideal for swimming with small children. The very wide sandy beach slopes particularly gently into the water and is limited by steep rock walls. A pretty promenade surrounds Cala Molins, along with a number of cafes and restaurants. Furthermore, there are two supermarkets, car rental, pharmacy, newspaper shop, souvenir shop, etc. in Cala San Vicente.
